چکیده

A recent experiment has shown that the force required to pull off a flat circular rigid punch in adhesive contact with an array of elastic fibrils is sensitive to the thickness of the elastic backing layer to which these fibrils are attached. This result motivates us to study the effect of sample compliance on the adhesion of fibril arrays. A closed form expression for the compliance of such arrays attached to a backing layer of finite thickness is derived. Our model is based on the assumption that the adhesive strength of a fibril is deterministic. In addition, we show that the normalized pull-off force is inversely proportional to the square root of a single dimensionless parameter . For large , the pull-off force is low as it is governed by the stress concentration at the punch edge. For small , this pull-off force reaches a theoretical limit that is governed by the ability of fibrils to share load equally equal load sharing ELS limit . The pull-off force predicted by our model is compared with new experimental data. Our model shows the correct trend but underestimates the pull-off force in the ELS limit. The difference between our theoretical predictions and experimental results is attributed to alignment difficulties in the experiments and the fact that the adhesive strength of fibrils is governed by local statistics. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Sliding induced adhesion of stiff polymer microfiber arrays: 2. Microscale behaviour

The adhesive pads of geckos provide control of normal adhesive force by controlling the applied shear force. This frictional adhesion effect is one of the key principles used for rapid detachment in animals running up vertical surfaces. We developed polypropylene microfiber arrays composed of vertical, 0.3 μm radius fibers with elastic modulus of 1 GPa which show this effect for the first time ...

High friction from a stiff polymer using microfiber arrays.

High dry friction requires intimate contact between two surfaces and is generally obtained using soft materials with an elastic modulus less than 10 MPa. We demonstrate that high-friction properties similar to rubberlike materials can also be obtained using microfiber arrays constructed from a stiff thermoplastic (polypropylene, 1 GPa). The fiber arrays have a smaller true area of contact than ...

2D NUMERICAL MODELING OF WAVE TRANSFORMATION ON SOFT MUDDY BEDS

The present paper offers a numerical model which can be applied for the simulation of wave height distribution on a 2-D horizontal soft mud layer. The model is based on mild slope equations and it includes combined wave refraction, diffraction, reflection and breaking. The high energy dissipation of wave height due to the presence of fluid mud layer has also been simulated. Wave height attenuat...

Underwater sound transmission through arrays of disk cavities in a soft elastic medium.

Scattering from a cavity in a soft elastic medium, such as silicone rubber, resembles scattering from an underwater bubble in that low-frequency monopole resonance is obtainable in both cases. Arrays of cavities can therefore be used to reduce underwater sound transmission using thin layers and low void fractions. This article examines the role of cavity shape by microfabricating arrays of disk...

Torsional Stability of Cylindrical Shells with Functionally Graded Middle Layer on the Winkler Elastic Foundation

In this study, the torsional stability analysis is presented for thin cylindrical with the functionally graded (FG) middle layer resting on the Winker elastic foundation. The mechanical properties of functionally graded material (FGM) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law and exponential distributions in terms of volume fractions of the constituents...
